ROTTERDAM – Rijkswaterstaat is working on a new traffic arrangement for the Suurhoff Bridge that should allow traffic to cross the bridge in both directions again. The new arrangement is also intended to accommodate truck traffic. It is not yet known when the changes can be introduced. Until then, the emergency measures in place since 16 September will remain in effect and road users should continue to expect disruption.
Rijkswaterstaat provided an update on the situation surrounding the Suurhoff Bridge during a webinar on Thursday, 24 September. The webinar for businesses and transport operators was organised by Deltalinqs, evofenedex, Zuid-Holland Bereikbaar and Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN).
The current emergency measures will remain in place for the time being. At the same time, Rijkswaterstaat is preparing a new traffic arrangement, referred to as ‘situation 2.0’.
Two-way traffic for trucks as well
The aim of the new arrangement is to restore two-way traffic across the Suurhoff Bridge. Trucks should also be able to continue using the bridge under the new traffic situation.
According to TLN, it is not yet known when ‘situation 2.0’ will be introduced. More information will be provided as soon as the timetable becomes clearer.
TLN is urging Rijkswaterstaat to implement a workable solution as quickly as possible. According to the industry association, accessibility to the port and industrial area needs to be improved as soon as possible.
Accessibility of Maasvlakte
For transport companies that depend on the Suurhoff Bridge on a daily basis, the measures are causing delays and additional costs. TLN says that the Maasvlakte must remain accessible and that disruption to transport operators should be kept to a minimum.
The industry association says it remains in close contact with Rijkswaterstaat and continues to press for swift progress towards a solution.
Businesses suffering financial losses as a result of the situation may, according to TLN, be eligible to apply for compensation under Rijkswaterstaat’s compensation scheme.
