US invests $89.7 million in truck climbing lanes and upgrades along key I-81 freight corridor

WASHINGTON – The US government is providing up to $89.7 million in financing for infrastructure improvements along Interstate 81 (I-81) in Virginia. The projects include dedicated truck climbing lanes, improvements to highway interchanges and the replacement of aging bridges along one of the East Coast’s most important freight corridors.

US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced that Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) will receive two loans through the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) programme, administered by the Build America Bureau.

Interstate 81 is a major freight route along the US East Coast, carrying 43 percent of Virginia’s interstate truck traffic, according to the US Department of Transportation.

The improvements cover approximately 325 miles (523 kilometres) of the highway, much of which runs through rural areas.

Dedicated climbing lanes for heavy trucks

A key element of the programme is the construction of dedicated truck climbing lanes in Washington County and Augusta County.

These lanes will allow slow-moving heavy trucks to negotiate steep gradients without obstructing other traffic, improving both traffic flow and road safety.

Several highway bottlenecks will also be addressed. Exit ramps in Wythe County will be extended, while additional merging lanes will be constructed around Wytheville. These improvements are intended to provide drivers with more space to accelerate and decelerate safely.

The projects also include replacing aging bridges over Peppers Ferry Road and the northbound I-81 bridge over Interstate 77.

Together, the upgrades are designed to reduce congestion, improve safety and strengthen the long-term reliability of this important freight corridor.

Part of a $4 billion improvement programme

The two loans, worth up to $47.6 million and $42.1 million respectively, support Virginia’s broader I-81 Corridor Improvement Program.

The programme represents a total investment of approximately $4 billion.

According to the US Department of Transportation, the improvements are projected to generate $5.2 billion in economic activity while supporting regional growth and job creation.

Construction is already underway on several projects, with completion of the overall programme scheduled for late 2035.

Lower financing costs

The loans are being provided through the TIFIA Rural Project Initiative, which offers favourable financing conditions for eligible infrastructure projects in rural areas.

According to Build America Bureau Executive Director Morteza Farajian, Virginia has secured financing at approximately half the standard interest rate.

The reduced borrowing costs are expected to help the state deliver the improvements more quickly and affordably while preserving funding for future infrastructure investments.

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy emphasised the importance of reliable road infrastructure for the nation’s supply chains.

By removing traffic bottlenecks and better separating freight traffic from passenger vehicles, the projects are expected to improve safety and efficiency throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Virginia Transportation Secretary Nick Donohue also highlighted the strategic importance of Interstate 81.

He said additional travel lanes, new bridges and interchange improvements will enhance safety and reduce congestion along a commercial corridor that serves not only Virginia but the entire US East Coast.
