Brandend containerschip de 'X-Press Pearl' zal snel zinken
COLOMBO - Het vrachtschip de MV X-Press Pearl staat al bijna een week in brand. Aan boord zijn containers met gevaarlijke stoffen als salpeterzuur, ethanol en andere cosmetische grondstoffen. De brand brak vrijdag 21 mei uit.
Vijfentwintig bemanningsleden werden van het schip gered nadat de brand dinsdag opnieuw aanwakkerde. Twee bemanningsleden werden in het ziekenhuis opgenomen nadat ze ernstig gewond raakten.
De Sri Lankaanse marine zegt dat er dinsdag een explosie heeft plaatsgevonden op de MV X-Press Pearl, waardoor het vuur dat onder controle was weer oplaaide.
Het schip is dichtbij de haven van Colombo vrijdag in brand gevlogen en staat naar verluidt op het punt om snel te zinken. Een aanzienlijk deel van het schip is al door de brand verwoest en zal de komende uren in zee zinken, aldusplaatselijke media.
Het schip is al naar rechts gekapseisd vanwege de harde wind in het gebied, meldt de luchtmacht.
Hoewel er al dagen inspanningen worden geleverd om de brand op het schip te blussen, lukte dit vanwege de harde wind niet.
De kustwacht heeft een aanklacht ontvangen tegen de kapitein van de X-Press Pearl en de rederij. De klacht is ingediend door de Marine Environment Protection Authority op basis van de schade die de brand aan Sri Lanka heeft toegebracht.
Sri Lanka bereidt zich voor op een grote olieramp wanneer het schip zinkt. De Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) zei dat een olievlek waarschijnlijk een grote impact zal hebben op Negombo.
De autoriteiten hadden eerder al gewaarschuwd dat containers of puin met gevaarlijke stoffen van het brandende schip voor de kust van Sri Lanka en de kust rond Colombo of Negombo kunnen bereiken.
MEPA-voorzitter Dharshani Lahandapura zegt dat op basis van het huidige weer en de windrichting, als er een olielekkage is, de olie richting Negombo zal drijven. Ze zei tevens dat er maatregelen zijn genomen om direct te reageren op een olievlek en de schade aan het milieu te minimaliseren.

As if the rescued crew of the burning boxship X-press Pearl have not suffered enough, they have now been placed in quarantine in Sri Lanka after one crewmember tested positive for Covid-19.
